What are the main features of health insurance for Spanish residency?
Having this said is important to clarify the main idea which is that the insurance must be able to match the conditions of those from the public healthcare system in Spain.
Consequently, the main requirements that your insurance contract must meet are:
- Can’t have copayments, meaning that you will no pay whenever you go to the doctor.
- It must be complete and offer the maximum amount of possible coverage such as Ambulance, home doctor, Emergencies, hospitalization, all kinds of surgical interventions, etc.
- Coverage all over Spain
These are the elements that you must consider when exploring the market trying to get the most comprehensive and complete offer.
On the other hand, the best offer or the one at the most competitive price (cheaper) will not work.
In short, don’t look for the cheapest one, make sure that all the criteria are met first of all (otherwise your application will be rejected).
What Copayments are?
We talked about this in our previous post “Top Definitions you need to know about your health insurance in Spain”.
Also known as Deductibles copayments are the Amounts which the Policyholder/Insured is required to pay the Insurer to collaborate in the financial coverage of each health service used by the Insured included under the Policy.
These amounts might vary in terms of the different types of healthcare services and/or medical specialties, and these amounts may be updated in each annual insurance period..
What are the main features of health insurance for Spanish Visa?
As an authorized Commercial Office clients all over the world call us and email us looking for this specific coverage.
According to laws in force if a non-EU Citizen is applying for Visa the health insurance for Spanish visa must meet the following criteria:
- No copayments (Deductibles): Amount which the Policyholder is required to pay the Insurer to collaborate in the financial coverage of each health service used by the Insured
- No waiting periods: Interval of time during which some of the coverage included in the guarantees of this Policy is not in effect. The said period is calculated in terms of months as from the date on which the Policy comes into effect for each one of the Insured included in said Policy.
- Full Coverage: This amount of coverage varies across the different companies but the product we have has unlimited expenses within the medical panel which is the biggest and most comprehensive all over Spain.
- Repatriation Coverage which guarantees your transfer and repatriation in the event of illness or death to the insured’s country of origin.
Does the policy cover surgical interventions while I’m on the waiting periods?
In the case of life-threatening surgical interventions and dystocial childbirth, the stipulated claims waiting period shall not apply, nor shall the said waiting period apply in premature births, understanding by such, births which take place before completion of the 28th week of gestation.

What is the length of my contract
The insurance is stipulated for a minimum period of 1 year provided for in the Specific Terms and Conditions, and upon expiry, according to article 22 of the Law, it shall be tacitly renewed for annual periods.

What Copayments Are?
The amount in which the Policyholder is required to pay the Insurer in order to collaborate in the financial coverage of each health service used by the Insured included under the Policy. Said amount varies in terms of the different types of healthcare services and/or medical specialties, and the amount thereof, which is determined in the Specific Terms and Conditions, may be updated each annual insurance period.

Can I transfer my Health Card?
The personal health insurance card, which is the property of the Insurer and which the Insurer issues to each individual insured, is a non-transferable document for the personal use of the individual to whom it is issued. In the case whereby it is lost, stolen or damaged, the Policyholder and the Insured are required to so notify the Insurer in the term of seventy-two hours. In such cases, the Insurer shall proceed to issue and send a new card to the address of the Insured which is indicated in the Policy and shall void the lost, stolen or damaged card.
